HERITAGE DAY IN PAARL
The exquisite garden of our friends Sara and Celia where we stayed over in Paarl
Hennie Meyer's blocks and my vases at Gallery 88
My vases and etchings by Erica Elk at Gallery 88
Display of the SJOE! range at the Heritage Village - a little 'cottagey' but it was the countryside!
Paarl is a town about 65 kilometres north of Cape Town in the heart of the winelands. We spent yesterday evening there at the opening at Gallery 88 and then today at the Heritage Village celebrations which were a bit fuddy-duddy but nevertheless rather fun. One of the main aims of this particular event was to bridge cultural gaps between a rather diverse and divided local population. So this was a start; and surely, with time and experience, future such events could be very significant.

HERITAGE DAY IN KALK BAY
This certainly is a crazy week...tomorrow there is a Heritage Day exhibition at The Pottershop in Kalk Bay - a re-launch by the new owner Charley - from 10am - 1pm. Then...in Paarl where there is the Cultivaria Festival the whole weekend, we will be doing a studio demonstration at De Poort Heritage Village (Main Road, Paarl)...and it is Spring Festival at The Old Biscuit Mill today, and the Heritage Exhibition at Gallery 88 in Paarl this evening...Whew!! Life is full and exciting...
SPRING SHOPPING FESTIVAL AT THE OLD BISCUIT MILL
Tomorrow, Thursday, there is a spring shopping festival at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock. Flower sellers will be out in full force and each shop will have a table with some special goodies on it...amazing homeware to funky jewellery; vintage and retro furnishings, coffee to gourmet preserves and super sexy clothes...so if you are taking your long weekend off early (Friday is Heritage Day) then pop down to the Old Biscuit Mill, 375 Albert Road, Woodstock.
And if you missed our SJOE! launch, you can view a beautiful display of the range in our shop at the Mill.
There is also a beer festival happening late afternoon and on 'til late...

REFLECTIONS THE DAY AFTER
The opening of the exhibition was wonderful, lots of people, lots of interest AND lots of sales. The walkabout turned into a poignant discussion on the role of hand crafts and studio ceramics in the 21st Century. All in all, a great day...now back in cloudy and somewhat chilly Cape Town..and on to the next project!

SJOE... MAAR DIS MOOI!
|
SJOE! ..maar dis mooi
(Translated from the Afrikaans this means WOW! ... but this is beautiful)
This is our new range of ceramics which we are launching tomorrow, Saturday 4th from 11am - 2pm at our studio - 501 Tollgate Industrial Centre, 12 Ravenscraig Road, Woodstock, Cape Town.

SJOE - NEW CERAMIC RANGE
Vases
Toast rack
Coffee mugs
Jugs
Oval dish
These are some examples of our new studio range called SJOE! - which means 'WOW!' in Afrikaans (one of South Africa's eleven languages) - and is pronounced 'shu'. We are having a launch at the studio this Saturday from 11am - 2pm.
In this range the forms are all hand-built in charcoal earthenware, sometimes with sprig decoration added. But mostly the surface detail is minimal. There are several glazes used, all monochrome, giving a somewhat gentle and meditative effect.
I am really excited about this work, it is quieter than my usual bright colours and patterns - another side to me I guess!
SANDILE'S BELT BUCKLES
My assistant Sandile Cele has been developing a range of jewellery and other accessories. See him here looking awfully stylish with his fancy belt and buckle. You can see his work at our shop at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, or come to our open day this Saturday 4th September at the studio - 501 Tollgate Industrial Centre, 12 Ravenscraig Road, Woodstock, Cape Town...watch this space tomorrow for more info!
