TO MARKET TO MARKET TO BUY A BLUE POT...

Today I had a stand at the Ceramics South Africa Potters Market at Rondebosch Park, Cape Town. My partner Albie, seen here posing behind the blue themed table, absconded fast...and left me to manage the crowds and the sales..it was great fun, and, in spite of chilly and at times windy weather, it was a good day!

PUEBLO POTS IN MACGREGOR

This past weekend I attended a wonderful 3-day 'low firing' workshop at Millstone Pottery in MacGregor, 2 hours drive from Cape Town. Potters Paul de Jongh and his wife Nina Shand offered an intensive programme included building a paper kiln, firing a low fired salt kiln and a raku kiln. (All supplemented with delicious meals provided by Nina and her mother, Helene). In addition, Master potter Ian Garrett together with John Newdigate presented an incredibly inspiring workshop on making and decorating pots based on the Pueblo pots in style and pit firing techniques. I found the whole weekend so exciting ...these are some of my better results (some were awful!) from the pit firing.

CAPE TOWN CERAMIC CACOPHANY

Currently there has been an abundance of ceramics exhibited in Cape Town and surrounds...on Friday I visited 'Heavy Metal' where I viewed the very interesting social commentary in the work of Gerhardt Swart and Anthony Harris (Ceramic Matters). In the light of all the recent publicity around domestic violence these are poignant pieces.

At the Stellenbosch Woordfees, Hennie Meyer presents a powerful installation of blue and white bowls presented on a lo o o ng black table surrounded by black 'ghostly' chairs - at the P.J Olivier Art Centre.

On Saturday I visited the Dinner for 101 at The Castle of Good Hope, a really great show presenting an excellent overview of contemporary ceramics in South Africa. One setting - a plate by Julie Lovelace - had been removed from the main table as it was deemed offensive by a group of young tourists from China. It seems the group had never heard of Ai Wei Wei, nor were they aware of human rights abuses in China....
The plate is now alone on a side table where in fact, by being singled out, it carries the content more strongly.
